As early as the 16th century, the fourth Sunday of Lent was called Mothering Sunday, when families came together to attend church. It was traditionally a day off for servants, who could use it to return home and visit their mothers, since they wouldn’t get to see them during the rest of the year …..By the early 20th century, Mothering Sunday had evolved into a tradition of spending family time at home.
Children and young people who were given a day off on that date so they could visit their families would pick wild flowers along the way to place in the church or give to their mothers. Eventually, the religious tradition evolved into the Mothering Sunday secular tradition of giving gifts to mothers.
Today it is a day when children give presents, flowers, and home-made cards to their mothers.
