As early as the 16th century, the fourth Sunday of Lent was called Mothering Sunday, when families came together to attend church. It was traditionally a day off for servants, who could use it to return home and visit their mothers, since they wouldn’t get to see them during the rest of the year …..By the early 20th century, Mothering Sunday had evolved into a tradition of spending family time at home.
Children and young people who were given a day off on that date so they could visit their families would pick wild flowers along the way to place in the church or give to their mothers. Eventually, the religious tradition evolved into the Mothering Sunday secular tradition of giving gifts to mothers.
Today it is a day when children give presents, flowers, and home-made cards to their mothers.
This year it is 31st March and Chocolate Café Customers treat their mums to breakfast, lunch or Afternoon Tea. It is one of the few days of the year when we don’t require you to book a table, but we always look forward to warmly welcoming you and your families.

Hosted by The Village – Chocolate Cafe
Only a couple of weeks ago the housekeeper for George Michael, a regular customer at The Village – Chocolate Cafe in Goring, asked us specifically to be the ones to run the bar and BBQ for that day. So, for the past week I have been planning on feeding and watering approx 1200 people, who are expected to descend upon Goring.
Christian, our in-house chef has been busy making 800 homemade burgers. And I could never have done it without the expertise of Kali Connery, who at the age of 17 ran the outside terrace of The Angel on the Bridge during regatta. So, we will be serving Pimm’s with fresh mint Lime and Strawberries, Prosecco, Peroni and Cider.
The Chocolate Cafe couldn’t do it alone, we have had to order in vast quantities of stock and with the cafe being bijou we have had to ask permission to use the village hall, Nigel our fab village butcher has been asked to store our ice, special thanks to Bidfood our suppliers for helping assist with the quantities. And Mark at the Angel on the Bridge in Henley for lending us his regatta BBQ.
45 cases Prosecco and 24 cases of Peroni amongst other items arrive on Friday and the organisation begins.
You will find a crew of us in The Rectory Gardens from midday on 24th June running the BBQ and bar whilst the Village Cafe at the arcade plays George Michael’s most popular songs whilst serving breakfast from 9am, lunch, afternoon tea and cakes.

At Chocolate Cafe Goring we have some of the beautiful art on display on our first floor. Denny Webb has a number of pictures which you may buy if you wish or simply enjoy in relaxed surroundings. Other artists are also featured.
Denny’s website says “Denny is an intuitive, experimental artist who works in Wallingford, Oxfordshire, she is well known for her luminous watercolour paintings using many contemporary techniques which she also loves to share with her students to help inspire them to step out of their comfort zones and re-connect with their creative selves.
Denny has worked and studied in the U.S.A. where she has established a large client base and won numerous awards in national shows, in addition she has paintings in private collections in America, Canada, New Zealand, Australia and the U.K.,she is also a member of the prestigious Oxford Art Society.”
We asked Denny whether she could add a little more about her philosophy and this is what she said. “I am inspired by nature…the changing seasons, the light on the land, an owl in silent flight, the majesty of trees and I try to capture the emotional response on paper or canvas.
It is my belief that there is an artist in everyone and it’s my job as a teacher to help students to step out of their comfort zones and reconnect with their creative selves, to dig deep and enjoy walking the path of the artist.”
To which we say…Wow! Perhaps it’s time to dig out my inner artist?
Local artists and craftspeople open their own studios or display their work in central community spaces.
Walk the trail on foot or cycle around and take in some interesting facts from heritage sites along the way.
The art map is available at The Village Cafe/Chocolate Cafe Goring and from many locations in the villages. Or you can just pop into any of the studios where they will be freely available or visit the main GAP Festival Website.

Celebrations of mothers and motherhood can be traced back to the ancient Greeks and Romans, who held festivals in Honor of the Mother goddesses Rhea and Cybele, but the clearest modern precedent for Mother’s Day is the early Christian festival known as “Mothering Sunday.”
Mothers Day is held on the fourth Sunday in Lent, exactly three weeks before Easter Sunday. This year it is 11th March ….
